Life gets in the way of our plans… plan on it.

Many times, the mindset and expectations from clients is while they know their fitness journey isn't supposed to be easy (especially in postpartum recovery), they seem to be surprised when life challenges them or gets in the way.

Changes and challenges will happen. Some of it is your doing, some of it isn’t, and not all change in a plan is bad either.

So, what do you do when challenges or changes in your plan get in the way of your health and fitness goals?

Make a plan that your plan will not always be THE plan.

We know, it can be frustrating.

The bottom line is that challenges and change are a part of life.

Here are 4 mindset shifts as you make your goals and the plans to support those goals:

1) Learn to embrace the changes in life with flexibility and grace for yourself and others. No one is perfect. People get sick, schedules change, life happens. Be flexible and give yourself (and your loved ones) grace. Roll with the punches, dust yourself off, and get back to your plan when the time is right!

2) Nail down your top priorities and β€œwhy” they are priority to you. This is a big one. If you don’t know why you’re doing what your doing, why would you keep doing it if its going to get tough (and it will). Motivation only lasts so long. Your why will keep pushing you forward (if it’s strong enough). Anchor yourself in your why. Write it down and look at it often.

If your WHY behind what you do in health and fitness (or anything in life!) is strong enough - you will make it happen, one way or another.

3) Be ok with changing the plan. Your initial plan may not be specific enough, realistic, relevant, or even achievable in the season of life you’re in right now. Make a plan to accomplish your goals - but be ok with making changes as you go (that’s why we love SMART goal planning!)

4) Anticipate the challenges to come and your reaction. Sometimes we can predict challenges to our plan (like a vacation coming up) and sometimes, we can’t (you had a big workout planned the next day, but were up all night taking care of sick kids). Don’t think of specific challenges, rather focus on what kind of flexibility your plan may need.

Regardless of your fitness goals, remember: staying consistent with your habits and schedule over time will allow you to see progress with ANY goal or plan you have.

Flexibility, perseverance, grit, and long-term thinking are all key. Changing your plans should not change your ultimate goal if your WHY is strong enough.

We’re not perfect, either. We're in your corner, alongside you in our messy, beautiful life journeys. Let's embrace the changes together!
